The Golf GTD is brilliant... I think it's a better everyday car than the GTI, I test drove one (no intention of buying, but something to do on a Sunday afternoon) and its in-gear performance is proper... And it's far more sophisticated looking than the GTI too.

That said, it's a shame that VW haven't launched a Polo GTD... yet, IMHO the Polo GTI is the true spiritual successor to the MK I Golf GTI, more compact, lighter with an absolute peach of an engine... a GTD would offer comparable performance, but with extraordinary fuel efficiency. The Polo's better looking too... ;)

If the GTD was available in North America, it would be my first choice for a new car. I think the GTD is the kind of car I've been waiting for someone to build for years. Too bad it will never, ever come here. :(

I agree with you on the Polo. Frankly VW could really hit the ground running in the small car race here in the states if they federalized the Polo. It's fuel economy numbers would compete well with the hybrids, and it's simpler and cheaper. But, as I posted at the beginning of this thread, VW's strategy is focused in a totally different direction. VW seems to be gambling that the small car/hybrid craze in the US is a short-term fad, and that once the economy improves people will go back to wanting big, cheap cars. That's especially depressing considering that VW is the only manufacturer in the US who sells reasonably priced diesel cars, and one of the few (the only?) that has always kept a small hatch in the lineup.

I simply don't agree with this at all. You're basically saying that the Altima's 4 banger is inefficient which couldn't be further from the truth. I can drive to Phoenix, AZ from San Diego, CA - a distance of ~500 miles - on half a tank.

Frankly I'm skeptical. I owned a 1999 Altima GXE with a manual transmition. Great great car for what it was. I'd still be driving it if some drunken moron in a truck hadn't totaled it. Anyways, my Altima was equipped with a different engine (KA24DE 4-cylinder, 2.4L) but was about the same size as your engine. It weighed slightly less, about 250lbs or so. Under normal driving conditions I could manage 30-31mpg combined cycle. On the highway, if I kept the speed down, I could do 35mpg (my best numbers were from a 360 mile trip @60mph - 39.5mpg). I had a 15.9 gallon tank, which meant I could get just about 500 miles on a tank of gas (I was brave once and drove 492 miles on one tank before I chickened out).

I don't know which year Altima you have, but you have a 20 gallon fuel tank and depending on what year, your EPA mileage is between 20-23 city and 27-32 highway. I'll grant you the 32mpg number because my Altima did better than the EPA numbers. 32mpg will get you 320 miles on half a tank. Heck, I'll even give you my best 39.5mpg number - but that still only gets you 395 miles on half a tank. In order to go 500 miles on half a tank of gas, you'd have to be getting 50mpg. And I don't believe that. I don't know of a single gasoline-powered car that can go 1000 miles on one full tank.

The Altima's engine is not particularly inefficient, but the car weighs 3000lbs. A smaller car with a smaller engine has the potential to get better fuel economy.

I don't call that inefficient at all, especially since I know for a fact that a Prius can't do that. Also the Versa's engine is a 2.0 which should be less powerful but in theory more efficient than the Altima, except for aerodynamics. It's just not. The only advantage the Versa has over the Altima is the interior roof trim - it really does cut wind noise better than the Altima. Beyond that, the Versa is an overpriced piece of crap, quite frankly.

I've never driven one, so I can't say one way or the other. It's 400+lbs lighter than the Altima, probably less aerodynamic, and the 1.8L engine has 50ish less horsepower.

But it's not all small cars in the US that suck. Honda and Acura have been making efficient small cars for years. I don't agree that the small car market is ignored - rather, it's not focused on. Diesel, in my opinion, is a failed market out here. Great concept, but there just isn't enough steam behind it. I applaud Volkswagen for trying. But the reality is that everyone has it wrong. The answer isn't petrol because it's limited, it isn't electric because capacity is at a premium, and it isn't hybrid because the cost is prohibitive. The answer lies in the very thing that surrounds us constantly. I'm afraid I just won't be alive to see people realize it.

The thing is, diesel isn't just a great concept - it's every bit as proven as gasoline-engined cars. It's been in use for over 100 years.

Buy the way, the 2007 Civic's real-world mileage is no better than my 1999 Altima's was, so I don't think Honda has a lockdown on fuel economy. I find it odd that you don't seem to think size has any effect on fuel economy. Some small cars are probably less efficient than they could be, but a larger car is always going to be potentially less efficient.

It was funny to me when this started and people were talking about jailbreaking and making it so this file could not be written.

People were actually willing to make their phones not work properly because of their ignorance and paranoia.

By the way I missing the part were Jobs said this was an oversight on Apple's part. From the part quoted here, it essentially says, working as intended.

Whether there was good intent or not, I'm just thankful I installed untrackerd from Cydia; it continuously wipes the location file. JB FTW!

Speaking of the people I mentioned above... LOL. Seriously. You are impairing the functionality of your phone because you think ANYONE cares what cell towers you might have been near... In your case the ability to jailbreak is a bad thing.

But that is the problem. Instant messaging has been on phones for over two years. Why would they want to sell a phone on instant messaging if everybody pretty much already has a phone with IM already? There's no reason to buy it if they're going to advertise a feature people already have it on their phones.

And how exactly is IM faster than texting?

just seems to me that people are acting like its a feature that shouldn't be on a phone rather then one that is almost standard. it also just seems that IM's are quicker conversations then texts, but maybe i'm wrong about that cause on phones it's pretty much the same thing.

Yes, especially on the tiny keypad on a phone? At best, the iPhone might have a slid-out keypad, which won't make IM-ing any faster than texting.

yea, but i think that if they do a full tiny keyboard, they will be going for something similar to a sidekick. the sidekick 3 was a major let down.

Can you guys answer 1 question for me?

When the next iPhone does come out how will iPhone 4 Verizon customers be able to upgrade? Do you think that Verizon and AT&T will work out an early upgrade for them?

Or do you think people who want the iPhone on Verizon will have already waited for the 5.

Once your contract is up you are probably ready for iphone 6.

In the meantime, penalty for earlier upgrade would be my guess.

................BUT 2 years is a lot of time for technology in the cellular field.

By then there may be a whole new way of doing that business out there.

Apple could become a player in that field like Skype. They can do it via ichat, face time or itunes or mobile me.

Maybe in the future we don't need cellphone providers, just data access companies. A wifi network all over the country may do.
Their North Carolina facility is only starting up........

OK, so I was surfing macbytes and found an article about had to install a trackpad into your iBook *bad idea* So I deleted my AppleADBMouse.kext and replaced it with the trackpad one. I reset and it says it was installed improperly and I can't use my mouse. How do I install this properly and could someone upload another AppleADBMouse.kext for me. It would be a huge help.

    Thanks

    MattG,

I stand corrected on a couple or your points. Again I'm mostly a developer and only dabble with admin.

Regarding the iNotes user issue. Their activity IS logged differently. You need to turn that on in the server document. On the interent Protocols tab you can Enable logging to text files and then review it with a standard application or to a notes database Domlog.nsf. It's likely done this way for performance reasons. A quick search on notes.net gave me this answer.

Regarding the last login time of a user, again it looks like you're correct regarding the person document. I did not find an immediate built in solution for this, which doesn't surprise me. Remember notes is more of a programming environment then a simple application. It's understood that if it doesn't do something out of the box you can build it yourself. If you don't like how mail works, change it or download a new template. If you need new views in the log database you can add them. If you want to track the last time a person hit's their e-mail database there are several ways to do that. Searching on Notes.net (2 forums) for "last login" or something similar will give you some ideas. If you activate the domlog.nsf database then you can write a little code, get the information you're looking for, and track it however you want. While it's not a built in feature, the fact remains that using the notes development tools you can do it yourself and you're not limited to how Lotus implements a solution.

Regarding the stupidity of the security solution.... In some Environments like the CIA and NSA which use notes, you simply don't want a notes administrator to be able to access peoples e-mails or other information that they shouldn't be able to get to. They need to administer the system but not all the data. Notes security solves this problem.

Now as you say you're a small college so you don't need this level of security. There's lots of posts and thoughts on ID management. Again if the user that was renamed wasn't using encryption then there is no issue as something can be recreated. the other was to go is to store the default id's in a "secure" place with the default passwords. But while convenient, this can cause problems.

However, I would say that if an administrator ever got caught reading the Dean's e-mails the school would quickly want to increase the security level. There's now a lot of laws regarding privacy...

Notes is not an end user solution. It's marketed to businesses and organizations. In my opinion, there should never be a notes environment that has an administrator but no developer. It can be one and the same, but someone really needs to know formula languge and lotusScript. With some development, you can write simple programs which do simple tasks.

As an alternative you might want to check openntf.org. It's a Notes Opensource site and has things like a new mail template, user administration tools, etc...

Can anyone recommend an app that does with video what iPhoto does with photos? It should have a library of thumbnails, folders, search, the ability to display most video types, not just limited to QuickTime, ability to drag and drop files which create aliases, etc.

Basically iPhoto for videos. Oh yeah, and free (my guess is it ain't gonna happen for free.
This app: movie montage http://www.findleydesigns.com bills itself as iphoto for movies. (quicktime only I believe) It is a crippled free version but check it out.

This news underscores to me that Mail 2.0 is really only a somewhat decent web interface for your email.

It's a crime that any application with WYSIWYG support won't allow you to select non-contiguous text to apply formatting.

Fine and dandy that .Mac is getting an overhaul, but I'm really hoping for some big improvements for Mail in Leopard.

Wow. Some of the most exciting non-"Apple product release" news in months, and it happens while I'm too busy with real work to keep up with the boards. Figures.

At any rate, congrats to all the new Mods (and even the mod mini :)). Excellent picks all the way around. It'll be nice to have the broader online coverage that overseas Mods will bring.

edesignuk, while I'll miss some of your more "entertaining" postings, even a toned down you is quite a bit of personality. Of course, now I won't have a chance to laugh at the "free iPod" morons in the morning, as you will have Wasted them before I get on. Small price.

bousozoku, Nermal, and WinterMute are all great choices. I have enjoyed their advice, wisdom, humor and observations in the few months I've been on MR. I have no doubt they will serve as great Mods.

There, that ought to be enough brown-nosing to start. Now, to go online and order four of those fancy massaging chair inserts....

I didn't get a 4 because I was holding out for a bigger screen. I really want to keep buying Apple products. But at this point, if the phone is delayed or the screen is staying the same size, I am going to have to start checking out some of the HTCs. My 3G is almost unusable since OS4.
